Where you sit relative to the dealer button determines when you must act on each street. Acting later means you see more of your opponents’ decisions before committing chips, a significant information advantage that influences every hand you play.

Why Position Matters

Position is the closest thing poker has to a free edge. When you act last, you have already seen what everyone else did, which lets you value bet more confidently, bluff more effectively, and control the size of the pot. Acting first, by contrast, means committing chips while blind to your opponents’ intentions. This is why experienced players play many more hands from late position than from early position. Over a long session, those extra late-position hands add up to a meaningful share of your overall profit. It is no accident that the seat just before the button, the cutoff, is also one of the most profitable at the table.

A practical habit is to widen the range of hands you play as you get closer to the button, and to tighten up under the gun. The same two cards can be an easy fold in early position and a clear raise on the button.
