Welcome to Poker: Chapter 1 | PocketCherries™ Beginner Course

This is the first chapter of the free PocketCherries™ beginner course. It introduces the standard 52-card deck, the four suits, card ranks from 2 to Ace, and the overall goal of Texas Hold’em: make the best five-card combination or convince everyone else to fold before the showdown.

What You Will Learn

Why the Basics Matter

Every decision in Texas Hold’em is built on these fundamentals. Once you know the four suits, how card ranks compare, and that the aim is to make the best five-card hand, the rest of the course, from hand rankings to betting and position, becomes far easier to follow. Poker rewards players who understand the structure of the game, not just the surface rules. A clear mental picture of the 52-card deck is the foundation everything else in this course rests on. Spend a moment picturing all four suits, the thirteen ranks from two through ace, and how any two of your cards can combine with the five on the table, and the chapters to come will feel far less overwhelming.

New players often rush past the setup and struggle later, so it is worth getting comfortable here first. When you are ready, you can explore the full hand rankings reference, skim the poker glossary for any unfamiliar terms, or jump into a free practice hand against AI opponents.

This chapter takes approximately 5 minutes. When you finish, continue to Chapter 2: Hand Rankings or return to the course hub.
